Hospitable Listening

Hospitable Listening

“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:33-34

As I write, it’s approaching the end of June. And I’m thinking to myself – it’s true what all the older folks in my life have always told me – things seem to go faster the older you get! Where did the first half of 2023 go?  I think that one reason that time seems to fly is that change seems to be constant.

We’ve been experiencing a lot of changes just in the street where I live. Three new sets of neighbours have moved in recently. So far, I’ve been able to introduce myself to two of these households – and they are all from overseas. That’s not a surprise to me given that Australia received nearly 400,000 migrants in 2022 – an all-time record intake.[1]

What marvellous opportunities we have to share the gospel these days! New folks are arriving not just to capital cities, but to regional centres also. We have wonderful opportunities all around to ‘practice hospitality’ (Romans 12:13).

And it’s not hard. A welcoming smile, a gentle listening attitude, and a curious mind-set are all that’s needed. But most important of all is a preparatory prayer. I was reminded of this recently when I joined with a number of folks from our Eastern Metro region for a ‘Gospel Fluency’ workshop run by the LCANZ’s Pastor for New and Renewing Churches Pr. Nathan Hedt.

Pr. Nathan provided us with tools to become more gospel ‘fluent’. The very first tool is simply to practice generous listening. ‘Wow, tell me more!’ is a great question to serve folks with. It lets them know that you are genuinely interested in them as a fellow human being. I believe that there is a great thirst in our culture at the moment for ‘listening loving ears’.

We were also reminded of Paul’s encouragement to the Colossians to: ‘devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful… Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.’ Colossians 4:2-6

What a great encouragement to pray specifically for opportunities to share the gospel – and watch joyfully as God provides them. When they arise, another tool that you may find useful to have on hand, is a little handbook called “Heart Talk” (pictured). It contains simple greetings in over 30 different languages. You can order it via the LCA NZ’s Cross-Cultural Ministry Webpage – or reach out to me on brett.kennett@lca.org.au and I’ll send you a free copy.  Get in touch also if you’d like me to run a ‘Gospel Fluency’ workshop where you are.

Hospitable listening is just the first step in building a relationship with the stranger and newcomer that we may encounter. May we remember that each of them is a precious child of God and loved by Jesus.

God bless you as you go, with Christ in your heart and on your lips, be prepared to be amazed at the good work – of listening – that Jesus has prepared for you! (Ephesians 2:10)

Introducing Lisa Burgemeister, District Hospital Chaplain

Firstly, let me say how privileged I feel to be the Hospital Chaplain for the Victorian/Tasmanian District of the LCA.  Here is a bit of my story.

I was born into a loving Lutheran family and grew up in a town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. I was also born with a Congenital Heart Condition which was discovered by a doctor at a health check when I was 6 weeks old.

My life of faith was consistent as a child, I was baptised and then confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  In my early teenage years, I was not so connected with my faith, but during one of my hospital stays, as an older teenager, I had a couple of experiences that made me realise God had more plans for me.  I had a chaplain visit me just before my surgery which made me feel calm and at peace.  After the surgery I was told it was a struggle to start my heart again.  This made me realise I needed a closer relationship with the Triune God so I could hear his calling.

I moved to Altona, Melbourne in 1994.  I worship at St Philip’s Lutheran Church, which is now on site at the Good News Lutheran College in Tarneit, and it is part of the Wyndham and Hobson’s Bay Lutheran Church.

I had a working background in Administration and Finance before I confirmed the calling to be a chaplain.  I have since completed 2 Units of Clinical Pastoral Education studies.  I’m also currently studying a Bachelor of Ministry at ALC.

I believe my life, having not only my own medical experiences, but also those of my family and friends, has been God’s way of training me for the role of Hospital Chaplain.  I look forward to being able to sit with people, serving them with God’s presence, by listening to their stories and supporting them in their spiritual and faith needs.

You can reach Lisa on the District Hospital Chaplain number 0412 200 946 or email lisa.burgemeister@lca.org.au. The District Hospital Chaplain role is a part time role.

2023 Lutheran Nurse of the Year Nominations

Nominations are now invited for the Lutheran Nurse of the Year award for 2023.

Nomination Form

The award recognises faithful and outstanding service during the preceding calendar year by a Registered or Enrolled Nurse who is an active member of a Lutheran congregation in Australia or New Zealand.  It comprises a certificate and a $100 monetary gift.  Nominations may be submitted by congregations, schools, aged-care facilities or other bodies or agencies within the LCANZ.

Nominations must be lodged with the LNAA secretary, Mrs Rose Howard, on the official nomination form by no later than 31 March 2023, together with a separate sheet giving details of the service that forms the basis of the nomination, and references from three people, including the congregation’s pastor.  A nomination form is attached.

The award was launched in 2020, to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is recognised as the founder of modern nursing.  The inaugural winner in 2020 was Angela Uhrhane, of Albury/Wodonga, NSW/Vic.  Last year’s joint recipients were Fred Miegel of Alice Springs and Gillian Mibus of Adelaide.

2022 Youth Leadership Retreat

Recently YYAM leaders enjoyed a weekend retreat together, playing boardgames and cards, enjoying sand and sunshine at the beach, retail therapy at a local Nursery Cafe (Poppies) and just lounging around reading books and catching up on the year of leadership. Those present also attended a Chapel service on Sunday at St John’s Lutheran Primary School in Newtown.

This year has been the first time in three years that the usual YYAM events such as Christian Life Week Camps could take place face to face so the leadership team have been missing the support and encouragement that comes from being together in the same space.

Council for Youth and Young Adult Ministry (CYYAM) members Jon Westphal and Kerry Linke and the new YYAM Facilitator Gaylea Fritsch joined the YYAM leaders for a a catch up in the afternoon and a meal on Saturday evening.

Not all the YYAM leaders were able to attend as about half are employed, and others are studying at tertiary level. These dedicated young people voluntarily take annual leave or sacrifice study time to encourage youth and young adults – we give thanks for their service and witness.

Local Mission, a department of the LCA

Background
Local Mission in the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) is about
‘growing as God’s people’ and ‘going as God’s people’ – the first
two priorities in the LCA Our Direction 2018-2024.

How we serve
Local Mission provides leadership and support to nurture a growing
missional culture in the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand.
We promote, resource and coordinate participation in God’s mission
in bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to all people. We assist
individuals, families and communities to lead people to Christ and
to grow people in Christ.

Under the oversight of the Council for Local Mission we are
organised as mission ‘departments’, each of which is supported
by a mission-focused committee:

  • Care Ministries
  • Cross-Cultural Ministry
  • Grow Ministries (Child, Youth & Family Ministry)
  • Lutheran Media
  • New & Renewing Churches

Contact us
Local Mission Executive Office
• information about church planting,
creating missional communities,
and forming missional leaders
• advice on renewing congregational life,
going as God’s people, growing as
God’s people, and communicating Christ
• suggestions for improving intergenerational
and cross-cultural ministry, and ministry
with the ageing.
