Social Trends & Mission Opportunities – The Rise of Regional Australia, a yearning for the ‘local’ connection
(a free online event)
What’s happening in Australian Society as a result of Covid-19?
Pastors and Layworkers from across the district recently had an opportunity to hear a presentation from Pr. Brett on some likely future trends in Australia which were based on McCrindle research. Mark McCrindle heads up a social research company that is widely consulted for its insights into demographic trends in Australia.
Perhaps the two most interesting themes are a likely demographic re-location from cities to country areas, and a growing yearning on the part of many for a reconnection to the ‘local’. There is an emerging desire for local services, local connections and a sense of local community.
Pr. Brett is planning to present this material again for church workers and lay people who may be interested from across the district, with a Q and A as part of a one hour Zoom session.
This will be an opportunity for us to reflect on a key question: What mission opportunities might the Holy Spirit be presenting to us, both in the city and in the country, as a result of these trends?
To register interest please send an email to Kate Burke kate.burke@lca.org.au with the words “McCrindle Research Social Trends Presentation” in the subject line (or ‘reply’ to this email) – and a few brief words about your interest in the seminar in the email body by 1.00pm Tuesday 14th September. You will subsequently receive an invite to the Zoom session.
The date and time for this presentation is Wednesday 15th September, 7:30 – 8:30PM.
Empower takes place on Saturday 06 February as an online event.
The theme is Setting Our Sails to Catch the Wind, with keynote speakers Pr Noel Due and Pr Nathan Hedt.
To find out more and to register go to the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Empower page or the LCA Vic Tas District facebook page
The District Pastor and Lay Worker CEP style event takes place on the mornings of 08 & 09 October. The District Office phones will be unattended at these times. We will attend to phone messages and emails in the afternoons. Thank you for your patience.
… and for this one?
Auctioneer Michael Groves in action.
“…and for this one I’ll even throw in the bag for free!”
And so the bidding continued quickly for all the donated items on a suitably cold day in July for the Winter Warmer at Good Shepherd, Traralgon.
The gathering of 35 folk from across the Parish was treated to an array of 10 soups, breads and cakes, including some delicious German style ones. Each soup was accompanied by a jar with the label of the soup name. The soups were judged by people placing coins in the jar of their favourites. And the winner was, not the Sauerkraut or the minestrone but the mixed vegetables and sausage, entitled ‘the MM Special’ (with some ‘wags’ suggesting you’d need a ‘military medal’ to try it!) The prize money became a part of a larger collection for ALWS which included door entry donation and proceeds from the auction.
The auctioneer, Michael Groves, was able to joyfully entertain the gathering and sell the wide variety of donated goods from across the Parish ranging from plants to CD’s and hand-made felt hats.
All present were fully entertained by poetry readings, jokes, a tuba solo and soprano solo, as well as the singing duo of Pastor Tony Castle on guitar and banjo and Michael Groves on bass guitar with a favourite being a response to the ‘70’s song; “Redback on the toilet seat” called “The Redback’s Point of View” written and originally performed by “The Singing Kettles.” Bill and Kathy Kettle (members of the Parish and of ‘The Singing Kettles’ fame) kindly donated many CDs and albums of their work in support of the day.
A brief history of the ALWS, especially the early years at Bonegilla, resonated with quite of few of the gathering who had actually been settled there.
Everyone was thoroughly warmed and blessed by the occasion.
There are a few changes we need to let you know about regarding holding this event from 4-6 September 2021 in Adelaide.
In consultation with the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand leadership, we have decided to postpone the face-to-face event this year. This is due to the unpredictable border closures around Australia due to the current outbreak of COVID-19. It is our hope that we can hold a face-to-face component of this event around late August/Early September in 2022. However, on September 6, 2021, we plan to arrange to meet online. This will be from 10.00am—3.00pm (ACST). You will meet Bishop John Henderson and the Executive Officer of the Church, Peter Schirmer.
With these changes now in place, we would ask you to confirm your interest in being involved in the LCANZ National Young Adult Forum as this now includes two events. The first event will be the one day online on Monday 6th September and the second event will be a 2–3-day face-to-face event in August/September 2022. It is important to us that you commit to both events to gain the big picture of the LCANZ and for continuity of participants. It is most likely that we will arrange regular contact with you throughout the 12 months between the online event and the face-to-face event, so be prepared to get involved via an online network to discuss matters of interest to do with the National Convention of Synod.
Once we have heard from you, we will pursue your expression of interest by speaking with your Pastor and District leadership. You will then be notified of your participation.
Please let us know of your intentions no later than the end of next week, Friday 6th August 2021. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume you no longer wish to be involved.
Kind regards
Jodi on behalf of the Grow Ministries Team
Operation 19:14 is a unique and innovative local mission outreach event that is held in Horsham since 2012. This is a joint churches event and is free for everyone!
The name of the event is inspired from Matthew 19 verse 14
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
It is held annually at Sawyer Park next to the River and Horsham Soundshell. Over the years we have had entertainers such Sean W. Smith, Colin Buchanan, and Freestyle Dance ministry plus many more great Christian presenters. Activities including jumping castles, pony rides, Orb balls, climbing wall, face painting, multiple craft making activities, BBQ’s, food and showbags. Everything is free as all the churches raise money during each year. Each Church promotes this event as well as our local radio station and papers. Operation 1914 has its own Facebook page!
Last year it was cancelled because of COVID 19 but this year the Operation 1914 team decided to do something a little different. Put the event in a bag!
Operation 1914 would be a drive through event, pick up a show bag along with free coffee and donuts for every car. Our Holy Trinity ‘Connected’ youth group spent a night packing 500 bags, each containing chocolates, snacks, puzzles, toys, Christian literature and magazines from Vision Radio.
On Sunday 17th October one of our local churches provided ‘The Drive Through’. 500 free bags were distributed as well as 250 coffees and 750 donuts! Many happy little faces giggled with delight as they searched in their bags.
It is a privilege to be part of a united local church mission right here in Horsham. We look forward to meeting together in 2022 to share Jesus with our community again.

Good News Lutheran College students recently participated in a meaningful intergenerational event, “Memory Lane,” held at Mercy Place in Wyndham Vale in September 2025. The event was organised by the Mercy Health Foundation in conjunction with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.
Our students had the privilege of connecting with aged care residents through shared stories, laughter, and genuine human connection. The experience provided our Year 12 students with valuable insights into the lives, wisdom, and experiences of older generations.
The event highlighted the power of intergenerational relationships in building empathy, respect, and understanding across age groups. Our students returned to the College with a deeper appreciation for the elderly in our community and the importance of honouring their stories and experiences.
This initiative reflects Good News Lutheran College’s commitment to serving and engaging with our local Wyndham community in meaningful ways, living out our values of grace, respect and integrity.
The event received coverage in both the Star Weekly and Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne websites (links below), showcasing the positive impact of faith-based organisations working together to strengthen community connections.

Ten Years Gone in the Blink of an Eye
On Friday 1 November, Geelong Lutheran College held its Connect alumni event in the Ngarrwa building at its Armstrong Creek Campus. Making use of the College’s newest building wasn’t the only new feature of the annual event – the evening also included celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the first ever Year 12 graduates from GLC!
It was fantastic to welcome four of the ten graduates back to GLC for this evening, where they caught up with some of their former teachers, heard a video message from Mrs Tattersall, cut a special anniversary cake and undertook a tour of the campus with Ms Ellis, where they saw just how much has changed since they last left our gates in 2014. School Co-Captain from 2014 Erin also gave a fantastic speech, where she shared memories of her and her fellow classmates time at GLC.
While there was a lot of attention on the Class of 2014, this event was also open to alumni from both campuses from all years, as well as former staff. It was great to have so many year levels represented, including a strong turnout from the GLC Armstrong Creek Class of 2023.
Thank you to all alumni, current and former staff who attended. GLC is looking forward to welcoming back its alumni community for next year’s event in late October/early November where the College will celebrate the Class of 2015’s 10-year anniversary.

Showcasing Student Creativity
Family and friends were able to see the tremendous creative works of Geelong Lutheran College students at this Term’s Arts Spectacular at the St John’s Newtown campus and Arts & Technology Showcase at the Armstrong Creek campus.
The St John’s Newtown hall was transformed into a colourful gallery, with student work from across the whole year and from every class on show. The displays showcased students’ skills across a variety of genres and art mediums.
Over the course of the afternoon and evening at Armstrong Creek, students and families were able to watch a series of Music and Drama performances, view student-made films, taste some cupcakes made by Year 7 Food Tech students, fly drones, and marvel at the artworks, products and gadgets created by the campus’ Primary and Secondary students.
