Held by the Risen Christ (2 Timothy 4:9-18)

21 October 2026

Our recent Pastors’ Conference and District Convention recalled some of the joys and challenges faced by the church in our day. Speaking of challenges, we were reminded of the reality of diminishing pastoral supply, declining congregations, fewer resources, the pain of broken fellowship, opposition, strained relationships, and difficult personal circumstances.

Paul’s closing words in 2 Timothy 4 speak directly into such a season. Writing from prison and nearing the end of his life, Paul knew loneliness and need. Demas had deserted him, no one stood with him at his first defence, and he longed for Timothy and Mark to come. Lacking material resources, he even asked Timothy to bring his cloak and writings. Paul also remembered the harm caused by Alexander the metalworker, who strongly opposed the gospel.

Paul’s experience – and ours – reminds us that Christian ministry is always carried out under the cross. Faithful service does not spare us from disappointment, loss, opposition, or weariness.

Yet, amid our challenges there is reason for joy because Christian ministry is also carried out in the victory of the risen Saviour. Paul’s final words are not filled with defeat. He could forgive those who deserted him: “May it not be held against them” (2 Timothy 4:16). He could testify, “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength” (verse 17). He could remain committed to proclaiming the gospel and confidently trust that the Lord would bring him safely into his heavenly kingdom.

How could the embattled apostle Paul show such forgiveness, confidence, hope, and praise?

His hope rested in Jesus Christ who was himself deserted, opposed, and crucified; yet raised from death to forgive fallen sinners, and received into glory.

Paul’s peace did not depend on human effort or favourable circumstances. It rested in the victory, care, and provision of his risen and victorious Lord, Jesus Christ.

This raises an important question for us: To whom are we looking to put things right? Peace does not come from having every problem solved or every expectation met. It comes from knowing that our lives, congregations, and ministries are held by our risen and ever-victorious Lord and Saviour.

Whatever burdens we carry, they are already in the hands of Jesus; hands that were stretched out on the cross for us; hands that were then shown to the disciples as proof of his resurrection.

When we feel alone, under-resourced, opposed, or uncertain, we are not abandoned. The risen Lord stands beside us, strengthens us, forgives us, and renews our hope.

With Paul, we can confidently confess: “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (2 Timothy 4:18).
