About Lutherans
‘It is taught among us that we cannot obtain forgiveness of sin and righteousness before God by our own merits, works or satisfactions, but that we receive forgiveness of sins and become righteous before God by grace, for Christ’s sake, through faith, when we believe that Christ suffered for us and that for his sake our sin is forgiven and righteousness and eternal life are given to us. For God will regard and reckon this faith as righteousness, as Paul says in Romans 3:21-26 and 4:5.’
This quote from the Augsburg Confession indicates the heart of Lutheran belief – that we are accepted by God only because of Jesus Christ and through faith in Jesus Christ. It also indicates the character of the Lutheran faith – we are a ‘confessional’ church, one that looks to God’s word as the source and ground of our new life in Christ, and a church which is prepared to say clearly what it is that God teaches and does through his word. Congregations and pastors gladly confess this faith together and are happy to share it with others. The new life God freely gives us in Christ also expresses itself in service of others.
